| Synopsis |
Oprah Winfrey has had the number-one-rated talk show for almost 20 years. The Oprah Winfrey Show reaches more than 30 million viewers weekly in the United States and is broadcast to more than 110 countries.
Since her start at a tiny Nashville radion station, she has become a media mogul, founding a film and television production company, an inspirational magazine, and a US$20 million public charity, and co-founding a cable network for women.
Abused as a child, she has even helped to pass a law that protects children from abuse.
In The World According to Oprah, Ken Lawrence captures this amazing woman in her own words, as she expresses the ideas and beliefs that made her who she is today. |

When I first turned the pages of The World According to Oprah, I was surprised to find that it was a book of quotes rather than a biography. But it makes for pleasant reading all the same.
The quotes are carefully selected, covering different facets of her life throughout the years. They give insight into her thoughts on matters as life, love, family, fame and charity. More importantly, they give readers a sense how influential she has been on the social fabric of American society.
On the importance of The Oprah Winfrey Show, which is the first nationally syndicated talk show hosted by a black woman in America:
"My show is really a ministry, a ministry that doesn`t ask for money. I can`t tell you how many lives we`ve changed - or inspired to change."
Many have heard how Oprah has given away cars to audiences on her show and even built an academy for girls in Africa. Such charity could be attributed to her own personal deprived childhood where her family barely made do with welfare and the one memorable occassion when another person`s act of kindness touched her life deeply. Today, her acts of charity is her way of passing it on.
"My dream was - when I first started making money - to pass it on..."
The World According to Oprah can be a nice gift for collectors of quote books and certainly a must-read for those who take inspiration from the dame herself. |
